All’epoca in cui il giovanissimo Andrea “Anto” Antonelli e il già tenebroso Gabriele "Gabri" Grassi si esibivano nel giardino di casa Sguazzini, pochi erano gli estimatori di quello che sarebbe diventato, pochi anni dopo, il Salvera sound. Eppure il fenomeno ebbe inizio proprio durante le vacanze estive nella costa maremmana, dove l’Anto animava i falò con la sua chitarra e il Gabri lo accompagnava con la tastiera, davanti a pochi fortunati fans della prima ora. In quel periodo fu anche realizzato un rarissimo bootleg con la memorabile interpretazione di “Topin”, prima composizione dei due musicisti emergenti.

At a time when the young Andrea “Anto” Antonelli and the already darkly mysterious Gabriele "Gabri" Grassi performed in the Sguazzini’s garden, few would have thought that this was to become known as the ‘Salvera sound’. And yet this phenomenon really did begin there on the Maremma beach, in Tuscany, during the summer holidays, when Anto and his guitar enlivened the nightly bonfires, accompanied by Gabri on the keyboard, in front of the first few lucky fans. It was at this point that the now-rare bootleg of ‘Topin’ was recorded; a memorable composition from the two up and coming musicians.

L’incontro con Francesco Farsi sarebbe stato casuale, nell’estate del 1988, e neanche troppo amichevole, durante un’agguerrita partita di beach volley sulla spiaggia di Principina a mare. Con il tempo, tuttavia, fra i tre sarebbe nata un’intesa, prima ancora che artistica, intellettuale, che nessuna futura vicenda professionale avrebbe mai compromesso.[1]

In the summer of 1988, the chance meeting with Francesco Farsi did not bode well, as it occurred during a particularly competitive beach volleyball match at Principina a mare on the Tuscan coast. With time however, there grew a mutual understanding between the three, based first and foremost on intellect rather than art, which no future professional dealings would ever compromise.[1]

Ma l’idea di formare un gruppo rock si realizzò molto più tardi, quando già Kurt Cobain era sprofondato nel suo abisso di disperazione e il brit-pop non aveva ancora conquistato il mercato internazionale. Studenti di giurisprudenza all’università di Firenze, l’Anto e Francesco si divertivano a suonare insieme vecchi successi rock, nelle ore rubate allo studio, con una chitarra elettrica effettata e una tastiera elettronica. Dovevano passare alcune settimane di distratte jam sessions nella casa fiorentina dell’Anto, prima che i due si accorgessero di avere fra le mani un repertorio di brani pop sufficiente per un concerto. Il progetto di esibirsi in pubblico nacque quindi in modo naturale e improvviso. C’era solo bisogno di un locale adatto per il debutto, e i ragazzi non tardarono a trovarlo.

But the idea of forming a rock group came about much later, when Kurt Cobain was already sinking into his abyss of desperation and brit-pop had not yet conquered the world. Anto and Francesco, law students at Florence Uni., used to pass the time by playing classic rock songs with an electric guitar and electronic keyboard during the hours snatched from studying. A few weeks of distracted jam sessions at Anto’s home in Florence passed before the pair realised that they had enough pop and rock songs in their repertoire to hold a concert. Therefore, the idea of performing in public came about just by chance. All that was needed was to find a suitable place for the début, and the lads didn’t hang about.

La prima serata fu una rivelazione: nell'autunno del 1994 in un bar di Rifredi, per una somma che probabilmente resta l’ingaggio più alto della storia del gruppo, i due giovani sconosciuti musicisti tennero un vibrante concerto di due ore. Il gruppo era nato. Ma serviva un nome.

Their first night was a revelation: it was autumn ’94 and in a bar in Rifredi the two young, fresh-faced and as of yet unknown musicians performed a lively set lasting two hours, for a fee which will probably remain the highest in the band’s history. The group was born, but it needed a name.

Nell’estate del ’95 l’Anto organizzò una gita sociale in Spagna, a Zarautz, Paesi Baschi, dove l’oceano è ideale per fare surf. In quelle coste vive un pesce, una specie di “tracina”, che ha una pinna acuminata sul dorso: si nasconde sotto la sabbia e ti punge se lo calpesti. I ragazzi, surfisti alle prime armi, in quella occasione ebbero ripetuti contatti con quel simpatico animale che i locali chiamano “salvera”.

In the summer of 95 Anto organised a social excursion to Zarautz in the Basque provinces of Spain, where the waves are ideal for surfing. Along this coast lives a fish with a sharp, pointed fin on its back; it hides beneath the sand and pricks unsuspecting feet if trod on. It so happened that the blokes, novice surfers one and all, came into constant contact with this endearing creature that the locals call “salvera”.

Suona come un tonno in scatola, ma, d’altra parte, serviva un nome. Intanto si moltiplicavano le date del tour, e alcune furono indimenticabili, come il concerto di beneficenza alla Gondoletta di Marina (con la partecipazione del polistrumentista Edoardo Marzocchi) dove la band offrì un’appassionata versione di “Europa” di Santana e dove si verificò il primo caso di marketing musicale attuato con la messa in palio di una cena gratis per i fans più calorosi.

Which is probably a bit like calling your band ‘herring’, but they needed a name and they’re obviously not fussy. In the meantime the list of tour dates grew longer, some of the gigs proving unforgettable, such as the charity concert at Gondoletta di Marina where the band gave a thrilling version of Santana’s ‘Europa’, with the participation of the multi-talented guitarist Edoardo “Eddie” Marzocchi (a former lifeguard discovered and brought to fame by Salvera and now fighting crime in mafia-riddled Sicily). That night will also be remembered for the first recorded example of marketing in the music business, when the band splashed out on a free dinner for their most loyal fans.
